Sid Tool Company Distribution Center
Under a design-build contract and an aggressive time frame, Quandel began the Sid Tool distribution center in January. The owner expressed a desire to occupy the building by Labor Day. A significant portion was turned over to the owner for occupancy in July, less than six months later. The balance of the buildings 274,000 square feet was also completed ahead of schedule. Construction of the building included precast wall panels and a superflat floor designed to meet specific strict tolerances.

Challenge + Solution
During construction, the Quandel team encountered a number of obstacles, including a blizzard complete with 24 inches of snow. To prepare the building site, workers had to remove 250,000 cubic yards of rock that was 20 feet deep in certain locations, crushing it on-site to use it as sub-base material. The roof joist and girder assemblies were prefabricated on the ground and lifted into place as units, saving weeks of construction time. It was also necessary to relocate a freshwater pond on-site. The team worked with the Pennsylvania Fish Commission to transfer the fish to another area and in doing so aided in conserving the environment.
