Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is the emerging standard for “early” collaboration that leads to effective decision making. Incorporating a BIM (Building Information Modeling) toolset into the IPD process enables the owner, design and construction team to use information in an integrated environment, increasing efficiency and enabling new ways of working.
A basic principle of IPD is the reliance on knowledge integration. Given that IPD encompasses highly collaborative processes that rely on the collective expertise of the extended project stakeholders (including designers, builders, subcontractors and owners), the ramifications of design decisions can be easily understood, increasing the level of project success. The resulting increase in project knowledge creates a better understanding of the project earlier in the design process, enabling owners and their IPD team to more effectively assess their project options and consider how to align them with their business goals.
LEAN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION
Lean/Integrated Project Delivery is a response to customer and supply chain dissatisfaction with the results in the building industry. Construction labor efficiency and productivity has decreased, while all other non-farming labor efficiency has doubled or more since the 1960s. Currently, 70% of projects are over budget and delivered late. The industry still sees about 800 deaths and thousands of injuries per year. The industry is broken.
Lean methods seek to develop and manage a project through relationships, shared knowledge and common goals. Traditional silos of knowledge, work and effort are broken down and reorganized for the betterment of the project rather than of individual participants. The result? Significant improvements in schedule with dramatically reduced waste, particularly on complex, uncertain and quick projects.

- Value to the customer is defined, created and delivered throughout the life of the project, while traditional practice calls for defining requirements at the outset for delivery at the end, despite changing markets, technology and business practices.
