Quandel was hired by Abington Regional Wastewater Authority to bring the Abington Wastewater Treatment Plant into compliance with a federal mandate that aims to reduce the levels of nitrates and phosphates discharged into local waterways. In addition to the construction of a brand new bio-solids management building, new process operations building, and new headworks building, Quandel also:
- Converted the existing filter press building into a new chemical feed building
- Renovated the main pump station and the control building
- Constructed two new concrete sludge holding tanks and two new concrete aerobic digesters
- Converted six aeration tanks into three new bioreactors
- Renovated final clarifiers #1 and #2
- Converted the existing aerobic digester into new final clarifier #3
- Added a second UV disinfection system and re-aeration tank
- Demolished the abandoned chlorine contact tank
New treatment equipment included grit removal, centrifuge, chemical feed systems, clarifier mechanisms, sludge grinders, blowers, dry pit submersible pumps, bar screens, compressed gas mixing system, coarse and fine bubble diffuser systems, new process monitoring and control system. The project was completed five months ahead of schedule.
