Project Description
J. Vinton Schafer and Sons provided construction management services for the phased modernization of the existing, occupied middle school. The school sits on a 38.6 acre site and consists of 205,905 square feet. The project consisted of demolition of portions of the existing school to accommodate new construction of an administration wing, an additional classroom wing, an addition to the music wing, and a new kitchen/cafeteria wing. Also included were an addition to the existing media center within an existing enclosed courtyard, and the addition of two cross corridors within existing enclosed courtyards. All remaining spaces were revitalized to the extent that all demising walls in instructional spaces were removed and replaced, and all plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems, including security, communications and technology, were removed in their entirety, and replaced. All instructional and non-instructional spaces were revitalized as part of the project. The work was carried out in phases while the school remained fully occupied by a student body of 1,500 and a staff of over 100. All systems were maintained in full operation throughout the life of the project.
