UPMC Central PA Bed Tower Expansion

Project Name

Bed Tower Expansion

Harrisburg, PA

Project Description

Quandel constructed a 64-bed, 66,000 square foot Bed Tower atop UPMC Central PA’s Community General Hospital, which consists of an additional three stories above the existing north and south nursing units for orthopedic private rooms and for medical and surgical uses. There is also a rehabilitation gym located on the 4th floor for orthopedic patients.

Intense planning and phasing had to occur among the Project Team members since construction occurred over occupied patient rooms in the middle of the existing healthcare campus. This was further complicated by the need for adding structure stiffeners to all columns to support the vertical expansion.

This was Quandel’s 12th consecutive project on the Community Campus, where we have been working since 2004. Our staff has now managed over 360,000 square feet of healthcare projects for UPMC Central PA on this Campus and nearly 600,000 square feet in total. We also completed our 50th consecutive Department of Health inspection on this Campus.
