Residences at the “Y”
Location
Wilkes-Barre, PA
Project Description
Quandel Construction Group was selected as general contractor for the renovation program for the historic Wilkes-Barre Y.M.C.A. that included creating 21 modern student apartments, restructuring existing facilities and a thorough cleaning and repair of the building’s masonry.
Occupying the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of the six-story historic building, the apartments were designed to serve local college students. A new stair tower was extended to the fourth floor to access the apartments and a new ramp was built through the existing mechanical room, which required extensive coordination to allow the building to remain in service.
Quandel was also tasked with moving an existing historic stairway to allow for handicap access with a new lift while preserving the historic charm. Part of the project also included renovating the front entrance and creating a dedicated entry for residences leading into a high ceiling lobby, equipped with seating, a mail area and an adjacent leasing office.
A new fitness center now occupies the space of the former swimming pool. Locker rooms were modernized and the women’s fitness center in the basement was renovated. A new elevator and roof were also part of the project as was the installation of a new air conditioning system.
