Project Description

The new Commonwealth School of Medicine is a 3-story 185,000 square foot structure designed to meet the current needs of today’s medical students. The project contains the most technically advanced laboratories such as a Gross Anatomy Laboratory, Vivarium Laboratory and Bio-Informatics laboratories. In addition, there are a number of teaching skills and clinical skill classrooms along with two lecture halls and a full service of student services such as lounge areas and food service areas.

The building’s structure is a combination of structural steel and concrete along various types of foundations systems to support the difficult soils conditions caused by deep mining. The building’s facade is a combination of metal panel, glass curtain wall, natural stone and black granite.

The building has been certified as Silver LEED Certification.

We selected Quandel as construction manager for our new Commonwealth Medical College because of the positive experience we had with the group during the first phase of a challenging building project. There was an incredible amount of coordination required between the two sites that Quandel pulled off seamlessly. We shifted midstream many times to achieve dramatic design changes and Quandel provided valuable insights and timely solutions to accommodate our requests. Whenever we threw them a curve ball, they always performed to their predicted level of professionalism. Everyone at Quandel was an advocate for us and delivered the best product at a reasonable price. Because of their commitment to service, professionalism, and industry experience, I would highly recommend Quandel.
