New Memorial Hospital
Quandel Construction Group was selected to provide construction management at-risk services for the new, 102-bed, five-story replacement hospital in York, PA. The hospital will include an emergency department, diagnostic imaging, cardiology services, surgical suite and a Women’s and Babies unit. A central utility plant connected by an underground utility tunnel is also part of the project.
As part of our contract, we have selected design/assist trade partners for mechanical/plumbing, electrical, structural and fire protection. Utilizing an integrated project approach, the team – UPMC Pinnacle, designers, Quandel and trade partners – is working diligently to ensure construction is complete in 24 months. The project is currently both in design and under construction – structural steel erection is underway while a “core and shell” package is still being designed. With a team that collaborates multiple times each week, this project is sure to be as successful as the award-winning new hospital Quandel previously completed for UPMC Pinnacle.
Due to unique site constraints, the project has involved multiple construction challenges. One site challenge was the unsuitable soils with multiple sink holes. To provide a stable foundation system, more than 700 micropiles have been installed. Another challenge was the 18” basement foundation retaining wall set atop concrete grade beams, all of which were poured in the middle of winter. Despite these conditions, the project is progressing on schedule and within budget.
