Project Name
Student Union Building
Location
Wilkes-Barre, PA
Project Description
Quandel was chosen to construct the new Wilkes University Student Union Building for its reputation, price and value engineering services. The new building is home to a dining hall, servery/kitchen, bookstore, cafe, bank and ballroom.
The main feature of the building is the first floor concourse, with a three-story sky-lit atrium that connects all three floors. The circular stair turret, bowed front facade element, projecting roof gables, exterior terraces and railings and mansard roofs are all reminiscent of the rich local Victorian architecture of the area.
The use of various bold accent colors and accent lighting around the concourse and atrium enhance the activity of the space. Materials throughout were selected based on maximum durability and sustainability. Porcelain tile flooring, multi-color spray-on painted walls, baked-enamel aluminum frames and railings and hardwood bench seating are several examples of the interior palette.
The new student union has been a well-received addition to the Wilkes campus, and the University is happy to report that the building has been an effective student recruitment asset.
