Howard County Public Schools, Hammond High School underwent a comprehensive transformation. Our firm managed both the preconstruction and construction phases of the project. The original 41-year-old high school spanned 197,023 gross square feet, and through meticulous renovations and additions, it now stands at an impressive 238,460 gross square feet.
A significant part of this undertaking involved demolishing 63,705 square feet to make way for a new 103,646-square-foot addition. Additionally, we modernized the remaining 133,318 gross square feet of the existing school. The renovation extended beyond structural changes, encompassing essential upgrades such as new heating and cooling systems, as well as included the incorporation of a daycare facility and the enhancement of multiple classrooms.
Originally designed for 1,220 students, Hammond High School has been expanded to accommodate 1,400 students. This transformation not only addresses the school’s aging infrastructure but also embraces contemporary needs, creating an improved environment for both students and staff.
I am currently working with J. Vinton Schafer on the $76.9 million revitalization of Hammond High School in Howard County. This is the latest in a steady stream of large capital projects I have had the pleasure of working on with JVS since 2010. As always, JVS has proactively managed this project to stay ahead of issues. Their strong preconstruction team was integral to the success we’ve had in shifting students through a 3+ year, 11 phase phased-while-occupied construction schedule. The dedicated field staff have done a tremendous job keeping the project on time while overcoming the endless hurdles encountered with Covid related production delays and subcontractor staffing shortages. I’d be happy to continue working hand in hand with JVS for another 10+ years. JVS never takes shortcuts, and always has the client’s best interests in mind.
