University of Maryland College Park Softball Player Development Facility

Year Round Practice Facility
College Park, MD

Project Details.

J. Vinton Schafer Construction (JVS) provided comprehensive preconstruction and construction services for the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) Softball Player Development Facility. This project enhanced the university’s existing athletic infrastructure by transforming the area adjacent to the Maryland Softball Stadium into a state-of-the-art, year-round indoor training space.

The 5,740 GSF facility was designed to supplement the existing outdoor cages and provide the Maryland softball team with a permanent, weather-protected training environment. The goal was to create a high-performance space that would support both pitchers and hitters with modern amenities and advanced training tools.

Scope of Work and Features:

  • Year-Round Practice Facility: JVS constructed a fully enclosed indoor facility that now enables the team to train throughout all seasons. The structure was carefully integrated into the campus athletic complex and built to endure frequent, high-impact use.

  • Hitting and Pitching Lanes: The interior layout included two dedicated hitting lanes and one versatile lane designed for both pitching and hitting. A larger pitching zone with two permanent mounds—installed by UMD Intercollegiate Athletics—was also incorporated to accommodate pitcher-specific training needs. Each lane was outfitted with suspended ceilings and enclosed by operable netting cages using industry-standard 14’ x 55’ sports netting.

  • High-Durability Playing Surface: The facility was finished with a full-coverage artificial turf surface, selected for its durability and suitability for hitting and pitching drills.

  • Equipment Storage and Utility Infrastructure: JVS constructed secure equipment storage areas and installed electrical closets to support daily training operations. These spaces allow for organized storage of training tools and future adaptability of building systems.

  • Integrated Analytics Technology: Infrastructure was included for integrating sports performance analytics. This included rough-ins for wall-mounted displays, data feed capabilities, and power supply systems. Conduits were intentionally left in place to allow for seamless future upgrades to emerging training technologies.

Throughout the project, JVS worked closely with UMCP staff, athletics representatives, and design professionals to ensure the facility met the university’s performance goals, budget, and timeline. The result is a modern, efficient training environment supporting Maryland’s student-athletes’ continued development and success.
