Project Details.

Quandel was hired by St. Luke’s University Health Network’s (SLUHN) Bethlehem Campus to replace interventional radiology equipment that had reached the end of its useful life. The project included demolishing floors and ceilings to accommodate the equipment replacement, new light fixtures, new floors and ceilings, repair of walls, and relocation of the equipment room exterior to the procedure room. All mechanical and electrical were upgraded, and new medical gas piping and outlets were also part of the renovation. Structural steel was installed to support the unistrut system.

The Neuro Biplane project required extensive above-ceiling mechanical, electrical, and plumbing coordination. Quandel utilized our in-house Building Information Modeling (BIM) to identify and resolve conflicts between multiple building systems. Utilizing BIM helped to make sure that any clashes were addressed before they could become an issue in the field that would negatively impact the budget or schedule.

One challenge in this Neuro Biplane project for SLUHN was that work needed to occur in a control room shared with an existing biplane room. The renovations had to occur without impacting the operations of that procedure space. Quandel has extensive experience working within active hospital settings, and we accommodated this need through careful planning and effective communication with hospital staff.

Lead times were also an issue in this project, which was completed in approximately three months. The mechanical equipment arrived just one week before the Department of Health inspection, leaving little time to ensure the space would be ready for their arrival. We were able to address this issue through constant communication and coordination with the trade partners and hospitals as well as scheduling overtime for that week to safely accomplish the necessary tasks with minimal impact to hospital operations.

Completion of the Neuro Biplane Renovation resulted in the installation of a new Siemens Artis Icono Biplane IR Pro so that they are better equipped to meet the growing healthcare needs of our communities.
