J. Vinton Schafer Construction, LLC provided construction management services for an addition and expansion to The American Visionary Art Museum to create the Jim Rouse Visionary Center. Construction of two new levels allowed for exhibit space, classroom areas, a visionary center, administrative offices, meeting and storage areas. Restoration work included the existing windows and brick, underpinning of the existing foundation and salvage of existing timbers to be used in the new construction. Preservation of the exterior of the old Whiskey Barrel Warehouse required that the structure be completely shored to undergo the demolition and construction. A focal point of the project is the Blue Glass Bottle Wall; 6,240 blue glass bottle bottoms had to be located, cut, cleaned and fit within the 200 sub-frames of the wall. The newly restored and expanded historic building is named after the social visionary Jim Rouse.
