Providing preconstrcution and construction services for the Cole Head House Renovation project is meant to improve the ADA accessibility of the Head House and completely replace the existing HVAC equipment. The Cole Cultural Center Fit-Out project is meant to renovate space within the Cole Head House to provide programming space for new Cultural Centers and provide updated space for relocated users who already occupy space within the Head House. Renovations of the “Head House” portion of Cole Fieldhouse (which is the portion of the original building that runs parallel to Union Drive) were not updated during the larger “Cole Fieldhouse” construction project that reached substantial completion in June of 2021. Many features of the Head House are original to the building (dated 1956) and equipment serving the spaces has been replaced piecemeal over the years. This project will assess the systems that serve the Head House and provide a more comprehensive, code-compliant, and efficient set of systems so the space can be used effectively for years to come. The lack of an elevator serving the upper floors of the building seriously hinders access to the space and the bathrooms located within the building pre-date ADA. The Cultural Center project is meant to provide space to support five new cultural centers. This project fits into the broader campus initiative to ensure that every campus community member feels welcomed, affirmed and experiences a sense of belonging at the University of Maryland.
