Our firm is managing the design and construction services for two separate underground utility projects within the College Park campus as noted below:
1. Excavation and replacement of approximately 1,400 feet of storm drain line from the UMD Circle to US Route 1
2. Excavation and replacement of approximately 3,000 linear feet of combined steam and condensate return line systems along Preinkert Drive.
The existing storm drains have endured 50 years of overgrown vegetation as well as substantial growth of new facilities overburdening the system in recent years. The existing system has deteriorated beyond repair and has reached maximum capacity. With the replacement and improvements to the infrastructure in this area, we will achieve:
• Reduce/eliminate flooding along the project area during rain that impacts both pedestrian and vehicular traffic along Campus Drive
• Reduce the pollutants entering into the waterways nearby
• Increase the visibility to the south of Martin Hall
• Prepare for the installation of the Purple Line light rail system
The existing steam and condensate return lines have been failing over the years causing safety concerns and damage to walkways and roads due to the high temperature nature of the system. With the replacement and improvements to the infrastructure in this area, we developed a clear logistics and construction phasing plan to minimize interruptions to campus life both residential and academic.
