Co-op Student Gets Real World Construction Experience

Mar 3, 2023 | Pyramid Construction

Cooperative Learning

Ayden Berenstein, a senior at Cumberland Perry Area Career & Technical Center is learning by doing. The cooperative program is designed to introduce students to work environments in their field of study. It provides an unmatched opportunity to make connections and gain real world experience in a business setting. Ayden has been working alongside Assistant Project Manager Christie-Lee Harlacker, getting acquainted with the day-to-day work of a construction professional.

We recently asked Ayden to talk about his experience so far and share his thoughts on what he is learning.

How did you get involved with this co-op program?
I had known about the co-op program my freshman year and followed through with it this year, my senior year. I followed the steps with my school and the shop program through VoTech. I was referred to Pyramid through a mutual friend/employee and grateful for their willingness to get me into the program.

Was construction a career path you had always been interested in?
No, I first became interested in learning a trade my freshman year of high school after teachers told me about VoTech and the perks of learning a trade and the co-op program. I chose construction so I will benefit outside of this program and my years to come.

What new skills, techniques, and knowledge are you learning in your co-op?
I have learned many real-life skills like responsibility, accountability, time-management, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of the construction process.

Are there any aspects of what you are learning you consider to be challenging?
Adjusting to something new has its challenges but overall, the experience I’ve gained since working for Pyramid has greatly benefited me. I have realized that construction is multi-layers and all components of the process need to flow to have a successful project from preconstruction to owner turn-over.

What is one thing that surprised you about the construction industry?
The preconstruction process, inside the office; the communication, paperwork, meetings, blueprint reading, submittals, schedules – has been eye-opening.

What do you think other students should know about careers in construction?
I would tell other students that construction has many career paths inside the office and out in the field for both men and women.

What are your plans for the future?
My future plans are to attend college for finance and keep my relationship with Pyramid for future opportunities.
