Drive Sober

Aug 31, 2026

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the leading causes of preventable traffic deaths in the U.S. Every year, thousands of people are killed in crashes involving impaired drivers. Many of these accidents happen because a driver believes they’re “okay to drive,” but they really aren’t.

Alcohol affects the parts of the brain responsible for judgment, coordination, concentration, vision, and reaction time. Even a small amount of alcohol can begin affecting driving ability before a person feels drunk. As blood alcohol concentration increases, the risk of a crash increases.

It’s not just alcohol. Drugs and medications that cause slower reaction times, drowsiness, dizziness, or problems concentrating increase the risk of a crash. Prescription and over-the-counter medications, illegal drugs, and marijuana, can affect your ability to drive safely. Read labels carefully. Don’t drive or operate machinery when you’re under the influence of alcohol or any drug.

Both alcohol and drugs can affect your judgment. An impaired person may not realize how impaired they are. This can lead them to take risks they wouldn’t normally take, including deciding to drive when they shouldn’t.

Protect yourself and others with these safe practices:

• Don’t drive after drinking alcohol, using drugs, or taking medications that could affect your ability to drive safely.

•If you plan to drink, arrange a sober ride home ahead of time. Use a designated driver, a rideshare service, a cab, or public transportation to get home safely.

•If you’ve been drinking, do not drive.

• Don’t accept a ride from a driver who is impaired.

• Read medication labels and follow the warnings. They might say you shouldn’t drink alcohol while you’re taking the medications, or that you shouldn’t drive.

Many people mistakenly think they can sober up quickly before driving by drinking coffee or energy drinks, taking a cold shower, or getting fresh air. Those may help you feel more awake, but only time can remove alcohol from your body and eliminate impairment. Generally, for an average-sized person, it takes at least an hour for the body to process one standard alcoholic drink.

Another common mistake is thinking a short drive home is safe. Many impaired drivers decide to drive because they’re only going a few miles. But crashes often happen close to home, and even a short drive can end ina crash. The biggest danger isn’t the distance—it’s driving impaired.

SAFETY REMINDER

Two more types of driver impairment include distraction and fatigue. Don’t text and drive. Do get enough sleep.
