Students Visit Site for Career Recognition Week

Sep 28, 2023 | News, Pyramid Construction

On September 27th, over 85 high school students from Lower Dauphin, Carlisle Area, Camp Hill, East Pennsboro, Shippensburg, Harrisburg, and South Middleton school districts participated in a half-day presentation focusing on careers in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) industries. The event, part of Career Recognition Week, was developed by the Partnership for Career Development (PCD) and the members of the Cradle to Career Alliance to encourage schools and business to connect, collaborate, and celebrate careers.

The students started the day at the CAIU in Enola, learning more about the ACE Mentorship program, a structured academic curriculum that teaches both technical and professional aspects of the integrated construction industry. In addition, an engineer from Pennoni and a civil engineer from H. Edward Black and Associates spoke about their jobs and touched on the civil engineering strategy for the project the students would be visiting.

A tour of the job site

The large group then boarded buses and made their way to the Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania (VOPA) Community and Tiny Homes project site located on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg. There, the students heard from personnel representing the different industry specialty contractors on site, learning more about their specific roles and the kind of careers each one can offer. The representatives from Pyramid Construction, York Excavating Company, H.B. McClure, Secco Electric, and Quality Buildings all offered valuable insight into their daily workload and what they love about their profession. Mike Zellers, Pyramid’s Safety Director spoke about the importance of safety in the construction industry and that on the job site, the priority is always to get everyone home safe at the end of the day.

Learning about an industry in a real world setting from working professionals is one of the best ways for students to find a career path and connect them with people who can get them started towards their goals. For the construction industry to thrive in the future, it is important to introduce the next generation to these dynamic fields and exciting opportunities.
